Your wellbeing comes first.
Patternwise is a space for honest reflection. Writing can help you notice and make sense of what you're carrying, but it isn't a replacement for real human support when you need it. When hard moments show up in your writing, how we respond matters to us, and we don't take it lightly.
Patternwise is a personal reflection tool, not a substitute for professional mental health care.
Designed to notice — and to respond with care.
The way a tool responds in a difficult moment matters. We built Patternwise to meet those moments gently — to check in before it does anything else, and to point toward real help when it's needed.
We notice, quietly
Patternwise is designed to recognize when an entry suggests you may be going through something heavy — without alarm, and without making a clinical judgment about you.
We check in, gently
Before anything else, it slows down and gently checks in on how you're really doing. A soft, human moment first — never a cold referral the instant a hard word appears.
We point to real help
When it matters, Patternwise surfaces crisis resources and encourages reaching a trained person — because some moments deserve more than a journal can offer.
Held to a high standard.
We can't promise what any person will feel or do — no tool honestly can. What we can promise is how our system is built to behave, and the standard we hold ourselves to.
We take harmful outcomes seriously
We hold our system to a strict standard: it should never encourage, instruct, or normalize self-harm. We test and refine toward that standard, and treat any failure as something to fix — not excuse.
We err toward care
When a moment is ambiguous, Patternwise is built to choose the gentler, safer response and to point toward human support rather than press on.
We're honest about our limits
Patternwise is a reflection tool, not a clinician or a crisis line. We say so clearly, and we design the experience so it's never mistaken for emergency help.
We keep improving
Safety isn't a one-time feature. We review our approach as we learn, and we work to strengthen it over time as standards and best practices evolve.
Clear about what we're here for.
Knowing exactly what Patternwise is — and what it isn't — is part of keeping you safe. There's no fine print to this.

If you may be in immediate danger, call 911 or your local emergency number now. These services are operated by trained crisis counselors, not by Patternwise — Patternwise cannot contact them on your behalf.

How Patternwise responds to expressions of distress
Patternwise uses an AI safety classifier that evaluates the initial analysis of each journal entry for signals of self-harm, suicidal ideation, and acute crisis. It does not re-evaluate later messages within the same session, so distress that appears only in a follow-up message may not trigger the safety response. When elevated risk is detected:
- 1Patternwise pauses normal journaling and shifts into a gentle check-in.
- 2It surfaces the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline and the Crisis Text Line (text HOME to 741741) directly in the conversation, before anything else.
- 3It asks whether you are safe right now, with simple quick-reply options.
- 4If you indicate you need help now, a dedicated crisis screen with tap-to-call 988 and tap-to-text 741741 stays on top until you confirm you have reached out.
Patternwise does not alert a third party, contact emergency services, or monitor your entries in real time — the system is AI-operated with no human review of individual entries. This page is Patternwise's published crisis protocol under California SB 243 (Companion Chatbot Safety Act).
A calmer place to think.
When you're ready, Patternwise is here to help you reflect at your own pace — gently, privately, and on your terms.
