This Cookie Policy explains how Griffin Labs LLC (operating as Patternwise) uses cookies, browser storage, and similar technologies on our website at patternwise.app. It describes what these technologies are, why we use them, and how you can control them.

What Are Cookies and Browser Storage? {#what-are-cookies}
Cookies are small data files placed on your device when you visit a website. Related technologies — including browser local storage and IndexedDB — let a web application store data in your browser to function correctly and remember information between visits.
Patternwise relies primarily on browser storage (local storage and IndexedDB) rather than traditional cookies. We use these technologies to keep you signed in, cache your data for speed, and — with your consent — measure performance.
Storage set by Patternwise (or the infrastructure that runs Patternwise) is "first-party." Storage set by an external service, such as our payment processor during checkout, is "third-party."
Why We Use These Technologies {#why-we-use}
We use cookies and browser storage for two purposes:
- Strictly necessary — required for the website and app to function: keeping you authenticated, securely caching your data, and remembering your privacy/consent choices.
- Performance and reliability — with your consent, telemetry that helps us understand how the application performs (for example, page-load and network timing) so we can improve speed and reliability.
We do not use these technologies to serve advertising, to build advertising profiles, or to track you across other websites.
Technologies We Use {#technologies-we-use}
Strictly necessary
These cannot be disabled without breaking core functionality.
| Name / mechanism | Provider | Purpose | Storage type / duration |
|---|---|---|---|
| Firebase Authentication session | Google LLC (Firebase) | Maintains your authenticated login session | Browser storage (IndexedDB/local storage) — persists until sign-out |
| Firestore local cache | Google LLC (Firebase) | Caches your data locally to reduce network requests and load faster | IndexedDB — persists until cleared |
| Consent / preferences | patternwise.app | Remembers your cookie and tracking choices | Local storage — until cleared |
Performance and reliability (consent-based)
We use Firebase Performance Monitoring and Firebase Analytics (Google services) on the website to collect aggregate performance and product-analytics telemetry — such as page-load times, network-request timing, and feature-usage events. They run in our production website only. They are not linked to a Google Analytics 4 advertising/measurement property, set no _ga/_gid cookies, and are not used for advertising.
These services do not set classic browser cookies. They store a pseudonymous identifier in your browser to attribute telemetry to app installations:
| Name | Category | Storage type | Duration | Purpose |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Firebase Installations ID (FID) | Performance & analytics | IndexedDB (firebase-installations-database) | Until you clear site data | A pseudonymous per-install identifier used to attribute performance traces and analytics events. Not linked to your Google account, and not shared with advertising networks. |
| Firebase Auth persistence | Strictly necessary | IndexedDB (firebaseLocalStorageDb) | Session / until sign-out | Keeps you signed in. |
You can delete the FID by clearing your browser's site data. In the US, this telemetry is active by default on your first visit — a notice lets you opt out or manage your preferences, and you can change your choice at any time (see How to Control). If your browser sends a Global Privacy Control (GPC) signal, this telemetry is suppressed automatically and the notice is not shown.
Third-Party Cookies {#third-party-cookies}
When you proceed to the Stripe-hosted checkout flow, Stripe may set its own cookies to prevent fraud and ensure secure payment processing. These cookies are subject to Stripe's Privacy Policy. Patternwise does not control Stripe's cookies.
No advertising or cross-site tracking cookies are set through patternwise.app.
Other Tracking Technologies {#other-tracking}
We may use web beacons (tracking pixels) in transactional emails to confirm delivery and measure open rates. These are single-pixel images; if you disable images in your email client, they will not load.
We do not use Flash cookies, Local Shared Objects, or similar deprecated storage technologies.
Do We Serve Targeted Advertising? {#advertising}
No. Patternwise does not serve targeted advertising, does not use your activity to deliver ads on third-party sites, and does not share your data with advertising networks for retargeting.
How to Control Cookies and Telemetry {#controls}
Cookie & tracking preferences
You can manage your choices in the Cookie & Tracking Preferences center — shown as a notice on your first visit and available at any time from the "Cookie & Tracking Preferences" control in the website footer and in Settings → Data Management in the app. From there you can opt out of (or back into) non-essential performance and analytics telemetry at any time. Your choice is recorded — including the policy version in effect when you made it — alongside your acceptance of our Terms and Privacy Policy, and you are re-prompted if this policy's version changes.
Strictly necessary technologies cannot be declined, because the service cannot function without them.
Browser controls
You can also control cookies and storage through your browser settings — most browsers let you view, block, or delete cookies and clear site storage. Blocking all storage may prevent you from logging in and using core features.
Do-Not-Sell and Global Privacy Control {#gpc}
Patternwise does not sell personal information and does not share personal information for cross-context behavioral advertising as those terms are defined under California law. We honor the Global Privacy Control (GPC) signal: if your browser sends it, our performance and analytics telemetry is automatically suppressed. You can also opt out of that telemetry at any time through the Cookie & Tracking Preferences center.
Mobile App {#mobile}
The Patternwise mobile app (iOS and Android) does not use website cookies. It uses Firebase Authentication tokens stored in device-secure storage to maintain your session, and may collect performance/diagnostic telemetry subject to your consent choices. For a complete description of mobile data practices, see our Privacy Policy. On iOS you can limit app tracking under Settings → Privacy & Security → Tracking; on Android, under Settings → Privacy.
Updates to This Policy {#updates}
We may update this Cookie Policy to reflect changes in the technologies we use or for legal and operational reasons. When we do, we will update the "Last Updated" date. For material changes — such as adding a new category of non-essential tracking — we will obtain fresh consent through the preferences center where required by law, and update this policy at least 7 days before the change takes effect.
